Knobbe Martens Partners Andrew Douglas and Amy Chun participated as panelists in an OCTANe discussion panel, “Is ‘Freedom to Operate’ Mission Impossible?” on Thursday, February 21 in the firm’s Orange County office. The discussion, intended to benefit startup companies, covered the concept of “freedom to operate” in the context of evaluating and mitigating third party patent infringement risk.

Vito Canuso, in-house counsel and IP strategist for ReCor Medical, and Mark Kertz, associate general counsel – intellectual property at Covidien, joined Andrew and Amy on the panel. Topics included how to analyze the third party patent landscape, how to set an appropriate budget based on the company’s objectives, understanding the impact of litigation on the company and what to do if your company is sued.
