2016 Symposium on China - U.S. Patent Practice

On Monday, June 13, 2016, Partners John Carson and Andrew Schwaab conducted a joint U.S.-China Symposium with the leadership of the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), on behalf of the U.S. Bar/SIPO Liaison Council. The Council represents the interests of U.S. stakeholders before SIPO.

John Carson represented the Silicon Valley IP Law Association for the Council and Andrew Schwaab served as Secretary and represented the San Francisco IP Law Association. Mr. Zhimin HE, Deputy Commissioner of SIPO, opened the meeting as co-host. John gave an update on software patent protection in the U.S., including a detailed analysis of the latest decisions under 35 U.S.C. 101 and Alice, including Enfish v. Microsoft. Andrew gave an overview of the latest legal developments regarding U.S. design patent protection of GUIs (graphical user interfaces).
